Description: The Minelab X-Terra Series of metal detectors are Minelab's newest entry to mid-level metal detectors. In keeping with the "High Technology" theme that is this company, X-Terra is no exception. Utilizing the VFLEX Technology, Minelab has created a new class of single frequency detectors. Light weight, easy to use, and high powered, two of these incredible detectors, are actually able to transmit and receive a different frequency with just the change of a coil. Microprocessors in both the coil and the Control Box allow both to communicate with each other. Depending on your intended target type and size, just pick your coil and frequency.

XTERRA 70
Decided to purchase the Xterra pro pack with an extended warranty, my local dealer through in headphones and the pro pack is only a 100.00 dollars more. Ive used the machine with the standard coil and it seems like it is very suited and has plenty of growth potential. I would highly recommend the machine and need more time to use it.Average rating:4.2 based on 5 reviews

Great detector
I love the X-70. Lightweight and works well under many different types of detecting. One tip, with headphones, run the threshold no higher than about 3. If you run it higher you will miss many deeper targets. For the price, it is the best all around machine available. The selection of coils really helps with different areas and types of detecting.Average rating:4.2 based on 5 reviews

X-Terra 70 won with my research.
I'm new to detecting and I had the same question most ask when buying a detector. What's the best one I can afford and why? I bought myself a cheap detector and found some coins. But I took it out one day with someone with a great deal of experience. He brought his very high end model. At the end of the day I learned real fast what a good detector can do to my cheap one.
So I looked on the net and a few other resources as to what was out there for detectors. After weeks of reading and a number of spreadsheets filled with all kinds of stats. I narrowed it down to 4 detectors. I posted a poll on 3 forums to find out which one I should get. Here is the question I asked and the results of the poll.
"So here is what I'm looking for in a detector.....
Can go deep 8"+ for coins.
Can help determine the difference between clad/silver.
Decent pinpointing.
Something that does not weight a ton.
That won't take a full year of learning just to use it half way decent. I'm willing to put time into it to learn but not every day. Just not overly complicated. But more advanced then the ACE 250.
Preferably Under $1,000.00. (Willing to go over if you make a very good argument why a SE or other 1K+ detector outperforms and is worth the extra vs. some of the others.)
Good for Minnesota soil (don't think much mineralization here).
Coil can be used underwater.
Good land detector.
Preferably more then a 1-year warranty.
Something other then a Bounty Hunter. The rest I'm O.K with.
Thanks for the help!!!"

The Whites DFX did get more votes yes. But the DFX had been around for several years more. Plus the X-Terra came with more free add-ons with most of the dealers I looked at.
I ended up buying the X-Terra 70 and I love it. It goes deep and plus it's good for gold prospecting. It's versatile and has a good range of tones and target IDs. Hope this helps!! HH

My X-70 experience
I have had this detector since August of 07. I was really wanting an all around detector, I think my X-70 truly fits this bill.Pros: Very lightweight and easy to use. It has multiple coils allowing for many different styles of hunting, in multiple ground conditions.
The user interface is very simple to learn, but also allows for the experienced hunter some tweaks., manual GB, beach hinter mode to name 2.
I really like it and hope to do some relic hunting with it soon.
Cons: I really have to nit pick to find fault with the 70.
1: I wish the head phone jack was in a different location. Like maybe the back?
2. The battery/spring issue? I mean this is a $700 machine, buy better battery wire connections.
3. Make it able to take battery in and out without removing the cover,
Other than that, I love mine, Beale Carter

X70
I have found the Exterra 70 to be a very good detector. Its light weight, easy on batteries & the controls are intuitive. Depth with the stock coil is very good. I have found a clad dime at 12" in the sand & an IH penny at 9" in dark loam. Overall a good detector! 4 of 5 stars because it seems a little fragile.Average rating:4.2 based on 5 reviews
