Description: Both Excalibur models, like the "sword of legend", cut through the most difficult and worst of conditions found on salt water beaches, to provide an excellence in water hunting found no where else. Utilizing BBS Technology, transmitting 17 different frequencies from 1.5kHz to 25.5kHz at once, and unique construction, the Excalibur "just finds the lost jewelry and coins". The dedicated salt water hunters will tell you how reliable, and tough this machine is. With either 10" or 8" coils, The Minelab Excalibur smokes the competition.

MineLab Excalibur gets it!
What can I say but, "WOW!" I bought this detector in April 2006 and found 25 rings plus around $250 in coins! I also have a dry land detector and have thought many times, "What do I want to keep this thing for? I find tons of stuff with the Excalibur."The Excalibur responds very well to both salt and fresh water. It's simple adjustments make the learning curve very short. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants something simple that finds stuff fast! I can even get caught in the rain with it!

My experience with the 800 & 1000
The Minelab Excalibur 1000While the Excalibur is not the newest submersible detector on the marketplace, it certainly is one of the most technologically advanced submersible water machines available.
Using 17 frequencies simultaneously, the machine offers excellent discrimination compared to single frequency machines.
The Excalibur uses tones as its means of signaling the presence of a metal under the coil.
It comes in 2 coil options: an 8” or 10”. The buyer must choose one or the other. The unit sells for the same price regardless of the coil chosen. The electronics for each size coil is the same.
So, what will help determine which coil you want to use? As a rule, the 8” coil will find smaller gold targets than the 10”. This will be helpful to those who will use it for nugget hunting. It will also be helpful to those who want to search at the beach., however, the trade-off is in area covered per hunt.
I started with an 8” and changed to a 10”. I hunt beaches exclusively so covering more area was important to me.
It is a rugged machine. The wires and connectors are durable and reliable. I have not had a significant repair since I first bought it used nearly 4 years ago. Some hunters who have hip-mounted their units report wire fatigue problems.
I have had to change rechargeable batteries and at $95 a pop, they aren’t cheap. But, they will last 1 to 2 years, as with any ni-cad battery, depending on usage.
The machine isn’t the easiest to learn. The tones will help you discriminate against ferrous pretty easily and silver is well differentiated from the rest of the non-ferrous tones. Gold has its own sound but it takes some time to develop you ear for it.
I think the greatest obstacle most Excalibur novices have to overcome is to find the correct settings for the area they are hunting. There is a “dynamic” between all the adjustments that you need to find and if you under-adjust or over-adjust one setting, it may put the machine at a lower effectiveness.
From what I have seen and read from other Excal owners, most run with “0” discrimination.
Positive Aspects:
Very stable signal. Virtually no falsing in my experience.
No “recovery” effect going from water to dry.
Effective discrimination between metal types in the tone signal.
Rugged wiring.
Proven record.
Negative Aspects:
Heavy,
Shaft fatigue.
Manual could stand improvement.
