Like a kid in a candy store

I bought a used Radio Shack version (Discovery 1000) of the detector to see if I would enjoy the hobby. Within minutes of turning it on I found a lost hardware item buried under mulch in a friend's backyard. The friend was happy and I was impressed. I then took it to an old 1800's site as well as a beach in New Jersy where my husband was using his White's. Although I couldn't pinpoint my target or identify one metal from another (except for gold and nickel), I could eliminate nails and pull tabs, and I was able to unearth just as many coins as he did. It's a great detector for a novice who wants to give detecting a try. I will probably sell mine and buy something stronger, but I have a sneaking suspicion I will miss its light weight and loud beeps.

Very Good Beginning Detector

I actually have a Pioneer 101 which is the Fast Tracker made for Walmart. This machine is very low priced at under $100. It is a basic machine without the bells and whistles. I have been very pleased with it. I have put it side by side with a more expensive Tesoro and found that it matched up very well. I use it for coin shooting and CW relic hunting and I have found items from on top of the ground to approximately 12" deep. For the person who is just starting out and does not want to invest a lot of money to start, I would highly recommend a Bounty Hunter as a beginning metal detector.
