Quality, performance, price and easy to use!

Divorced (about to be re-married) dad seeking new hobby decides to do some Googling and finds a link to metal detectors. Knowing that he's always wanted one, and knowing that he's about to go to Puerto Rico on his weddingmoon, the gears started turning and smoke started pouring. 1.5 years later, and lots of metal detecting forum and posts visited and read, he pulls the trigger on a Tesoro Tiger Shark.

Why did I buy the Tiger Shark?

The Tiger Shark was chosen because of its quality, lifetime warranty, excellent reputation, and extremely low occurrence for resale on sites like ebay or the detecting forum classified sections. If you want to get an idea of what people are using, reverse your thinking and take a look at what's for sale and ask them why they're selling some of these top-of-the line detectors. Then compare those quantities to used Tesoro's.

What kind of machine is the Tiger Shark?

First, I need to note that I am not experienced, and I have less than 50 hours under my belt using this detector. My maiden voyage I went to a local state park with a freshwater lake and with a fellow detectorist. With scuba booties on my feet and a full suit up to my neck, and a quality scoop in one hand and my detector in the other, I ground balanced my detector and walked into the surf.

Please note that even though this is a water detector, designed to go up to 200 feet under water (fresh or salt), you can also use it for land/relic/coin hunting. It is a bit heavier than other land detectors, but since you can hip mount the control box, this makes for a very light rig.

The price:

First of all, never pay retail. If you PM me on the boards, I'll send you to an authorized dealer online. If you've got questions, he's got answers, and a lot of them. Since retail is $750, dealers are competing like mad and sell them for the lowest price they can, which is around $600.

Ground Balance/All Metal:

Since the TS does not auto balance, 30 to 60 seconds after you power on the unit, you should be manually balanced and ready to go. With the turn of a knob, you're in all metal mode.

Weight/Balance:

About 4.5 lbs with stock coil and box connected to pole. With multiple positions to mount your control box (under the elbow is my preferred location), and multi position for the length of your pole, and the ability to hip mount, you will find a combo that works for you.

Coils:

There are several choices for coils, and the fact that you can change them yourself is FANTASTIC! Too many other water detectors lock you into one, and only one, coil. The detector comes with a stock 8 inch, and I have the stock along with the Clean Sweep Coil... a very sought after coil for the TS since Tesoro doesn't make them anymore for this detector. If you can find one, consider getting it. The CSC is sought after for the main reasons of being waterproof without an adapter and you can cover ground so much easier and efficiently because of the length. Overlapping is never a problem, and pin pointing can be done on the toe or heel of the coil instead of criss crossing, and can even allow you to get into tighter places or along areas like fence lines.

Batteries:

8 AA batteries are used, and locked inside the control box. When testing the power left in your batteries, just power on the detector and you'll hear a series of beeps. The less beeps, the less power you have left. You should get up to about 20 hours of use before realizing any degradation in sensitivity, depth, or the quality of your search. Using a quality rechargeable battery will return the investment back to you within the first few times you have to recharge them.

Something to note about the differences between alkaline and rechargeable is that alkaline cells get lower and lower and take their time to die over time. Rechargeable cells tend to die when it is time to die.

Pros:

Easy to use, waterproof headphones and control box, sensitive to small metal. I found a washer the diameter of a pencil eraser, and as thin as my finger nail, in 4 inches of wet sand.

Cons:

No tone or visual id. Though I may like tone id because I'm such a noob, getting out there and learning the squawking or solid sounds your detector makes from the different finds, and you'll know what is what. And though I'm still learning, I have gone back and dug up things that I thought were junk and passed over on purpose (tabs, bobby pins, foil, etc) and found that they were just that. It takes time, but listen and learn.

Please note that without some of the extra features like tone id and auto ground balance, you're able to save quite a bit of money and get an awesome metal detector for the price, and let's not forget about that lifetime warranty. The makers of this product believe in it well enough to give it the best warranty in the business, and if you don't believe me, call Tesoro yourself and ask for James, the owner, and ask him yourself. Not only is this his company, he does answer the phone to speak to his customers, and he's a straight shooting guy... I say that from my own experience from speaking to him.
